Sukošan Solar Power Plant

Sukošan Solar Power Plant project (SPP Sukošan) is located in Zadar County, within the Municipality of Sukošan, extending over cadastral plots 645/1 and 645/5 in the Sukošan cadastral municipality. The project site is extremely favourable for the production of solar energy – about 3 km northeast of Sukošan, 1.5 km north of the Debeljak township, and approximately 2 km south of Zadar Airport.

The planned grid connection capacity  of SPP Sukošan at the interface with the 110 kV transmission network is 45 MW, while the installation of PV module capacity of approximately 56.5 MWp, and AC inverter capacity of approximately 48.3 MVA is planned under the project. The solar power plant will cover an area of about 54.8 hectares, which makes it a significant new capacity for the production of clean electricity in Croatia.

In addition to the construction of the solar power plant, the project also includes the construction of a new 110/33 kV Sukošan substation, required for connection to the 110 kV Zadar-Biograd East transmission network.

The SPP project is also planned to be expanded through the construction of an internal Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) that will enable the storage of generated electricity and its delayed dispatch depending on grid conditions and electricity market conditions. The planned energy storage system will operate at power of up to 50 MW and capacity of up to 200 MWh. It will include the installation of battery units, LV/MV substations, and integration of their SCADA and control systems. The battery containers will be equipped with cooling systems, ventilation, fire prevention, detection and suppression system according to valid safety standards.

The scope of construction works will include the preparation and leveling of the power plant site, the construction of an access road and internal gravel roads, the installation of photovoltaic modules mounted on supporting structures, and the construction of the entire electrical infrastructure of the solar power plant. The latter includes LV and MV cable networks, string inverters, internal LV/MV substations, control and monitoring installations, grounding systems and associated equipment. The project also includes perimeter fencing and video surveillance to restrict access.

All battery system equipment will be placed within the solar power plant area, near the internal Sukošan substation, and accessible via the internal solar power plant road network.

A location permit has already been obtained, while the building permit is expected in the second quarter of 2026. The project is expected to reach ready-to-build status in the fourth quarter of 2026. The Sukošan SPP project is at an advanced stage of development and is planned to be financed with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), with procurement procedures in accordance with EBRD rules and policies.

The implementation of this project will further strengthen the production capacity of renewable energy sources in Croatia, contribute to the energy transition and increase the security of electricity supply.
