Mayors' and County Prefects' Energy Charter accepted

The first conference on Systematic Energy Management in Cities and Counties in Croatia, co-organized by HEP ESCO, was held in Split from May 12 to 14.

At the conference a project entitled Systematic Energy Management was presented, implemented jointly by the Ministry of Economy, Labour and Entrepreneurship (MINGORP) and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and supported by the Croatian Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund (FZOEU) and by Global Environment Facility (GEF). The conference, with numerous sponsors, was organized by MINGORP, Ministry of Environmental Protection, Physical Planning and Construction, Ministry of Finance, FZOEU, Association of Croatian Counties, Split-Dalmatia County, Association of Cities, UNDP Croatia, the City of Split and HEP ESCO d.o.o.

The conference accepted Mayors’and County Prefects’ Energy Charter which obligates cities and counties to use energy more efficiently, to introduce new, renewable energy sources and to take care of the environment to the benefit of all citizens. As at the first day of the conference, the Charter was signed by 85 cities (of a total of 127) and 17 of the 21 counties, or 102 cities and counties. A tripartite agreement was also signed between MINGORP, FZOEU and UNDP on the financing of the project Systematic Energy Management for 2008-2009 in the amount of 20 million kuna. The agreement was signed by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Labour and Entrepreneurship Damir Polančec, Director of Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund Vinko Mladineo and Resident Representative of UNDP in Croatia Yuri Afanasiev. The conference was on the first day attended by the president and members of HEP Management Board.
