50th anniversary of Dubrovnik Hydropower Plant

11.03.2016.
Hrvatska elektroprivreda celebrated today the 50th anniversary of commissioning of Dubrovnik hydropower plant (HPP Dubrovnik), one of the most important parts of the Croatian electric power system and the first hydropower plant which was renovated within a multi-year programme of the renovation and revitalisation of HEP's hydropower plants.

The anniversary was attended by the representatives of business partners and contractors employed on HPP Dubrovnik revitalisation as well as local and regional self-government represented by Andro Vlahušić, the Mayor of Dubrovnik. Mr. Zdeslav Matić, Deputy Minister in charge of Energy, welcomed the present on behalf of the Ministry of Economy.

Dubrovnik hydropower plant was built in 1965. In January this year, a 320 million kuna worth revitalisation project was completed resulting in increasing its capacity by additional 36 MW (2x18 MW) to a total of 252 MW (2x126 MW). This will provide the additional production of almost 100 GWh of certified green energy every year. As the HPP Dubrovnik accumulation lake is located on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, one of its units generates electricity for the electric power system of Bosnia and Herzegovina (the Republic of Srpska).  During 50 years of its operation, this hydropower plant has generated almost 60 billion kWh, 30 billion of which was delivered to the Croatian electric power system – almost double the amount of the Croatia's overall annual consumption. HPP Dubrovnik is also the first hydropower plant which was renovated as part of the comprehensive multi-year renovation and revitalisation programme of HEP's hydropower plants. The 3.6 billion kuna worth revitalisation programme will ensure about 120 MW of new capacity, which equals the production of a new hydropower plant, sixth by capacity among 26 existing HEP's hydropower plants.
