The Transmission Area Rijeka carries out the transmission activity in the area of four counties: Istria, Primorje-Gorski Kotar, Lika-Senj and partially Zadar.. The distribution areas in these counties are Elektroistra Pula, Elektroprimorje Rijeka, Elektrolika Gospić and partially Elektra Zadar.
The Transmision Area Rijeka covers the area of Istria, northern Adriatic coast and islands (Krk, Cres, Lošinj, Rab) Gorski Kotar and most of Lika. The Transmission Area Rijeka is characterized by diverse terrains in terms of geography, climate and economy – ranging from mountainous, less developed areas to coastal, economically developed areas with Mediterranean climate. Weather conditions, such as the northerly wind Bura, salting and frequent lightning discharges have great influence on the operation and maintenance of the power system.
The Transmission Area Rijeka has 237 employees. The Area covers about 11,752 km2 or about 21 percent of the national territory. It accounts for 17-19 percent of total electricity consumption and system peak load. The Area is responsible for 1.625,9 km of high voltage lines and 27 high voltage transformer stations of the total installed capacity of 2,358 MVA with 45 transformers and 161 circuit breaker bays.
The Area transmission network is connected with Slovenia through four high voltage lines and with Bosnia and Herzegovina through one transmission line. There are six hydro power plants and three thermal power plants in the Area which in 2005 generated 4 TWh. Electricity consumption was 2.9 TWh with the annual increase of 5.1 percent. In 2005, the transit through the Area was 5.4 TWh and peak - load was 518 MW. The highest peak load is in the Istria region, which reaches 205 MW in summer months.
Over the past 20 years there has been a gradual change in the structure of customers in the Area and peak load has been on the increase from year to year. Electricity supply in Istria is a problem since it is mainly provided from the 110 kV switchyard located at Plomin thermal power plant. All outgoing transmission lines are loaded almost to the highest permissible value so that network expansion and construction of new supply points is currently underway. The Area transmission network has a significant transit role. After the reconnection of UCTE zones one and two electricity transit on the 400 kV lines Melina - Tumbri and Melina-Divača has been increased. The loads on these lines reach up to 1000 MW.
