Investment priorities for renewable energy sources

Taking into account the state of the Croatian electricity system, the degree of development and profitability of different renewable energy sources in Europe and the world, HEP OIE  has set investment priorities as follows:

Wind power plants have the highest investment priority due to:

  • highly advanced technology,
  • relatively large experience in EU countries and the world,
  • relatively high installed capacity, and
  • very good wind potential in some areas of Croatia.

Biomass power plants take the second place due to:

  • big potential, unused so far, of resources in Croatia (waste, wood industry waste, agricultural waste and the like),
  • relatively high installed capacity, and
  • greater possibilities for planning of resources.

Small hydro power plants take the third place in the priority list due to:

  • their proven technology,
  • HEP has large experience with construction, maintenance and operation of such plants.

Geothermal power plants are in the fourth place due to:

  • according to estimates, Croatia has above-average geothermal potential on European scale,
  • relatively high tariffs (1.26kn/kWh) are set for electricity production from such sources,
  • technologies involved are very expensive and relatively unknown in our market,
  • such plants pose higher risk compared with other renewable sources and technologies.

Photovoltaic power plants take the last place due to:

  • non-economical centralized production, and
  • legal maximum of 1 MW of installed capacity in the entire Croatia in 2010.

HEP OIE will consider all projects from potential partners, however, it will always take into account the above list of investment priorities to which it will channel its funds and cooperation.
