HEP and the environment

HEP and EU standards

The Republic of Croatian is one of those European countries that have the lowest emissions of greenhouse and acid gases. Thanks to the measures HEP has been implementing   the contribution to total emissions from the electricity sector is relatively small.

In building new plants HEP applies best available environmental technologies which guarantee compliance with all EU environmental legislation.

After the closing of EU accession negotiations and during a two-year monitoring of the implementation of commitments undertaken by Croatia, HEP will continue to promote and transfer the fundamental values of the European Union in the area of energy, including security of supply and operation based on sustainable  and environmentally acceptable development.

Environmental protection award

HEP's many years of compliance with sustainable development standards was recognized by relevant institutions: in 2003 HEP received a national award for general contribution to environmental protection.

Certificates

All hydro power plants have certificates of electricity production from renewable sources, which places HEP Proizvodnja among large certified producers of renewable energy in Europe, green energy.

ISO 14001 Certificate for environmental management within HEP Proizvodnja d.o.o. issued to TE-TO Zagreb (by BVQI), EL-TO Zagreb, CCPP Jertovec and hydro production areas North and West (by Det Norske Veritas) with all hydro power plants included, within HEP ODS to Elektra Zagreb, and within HEP OPS to Zagreb Transmission Area (by Bureau Veritas)

ISO 9001 Certificate for quality management issed to TE-TO Zagreb (by Bureau Veritas), EL-TO Zagreb and CCPP Jertovec and hydro production areas North and West (by Det Norske Veritas) with all hydro power plants included


Biodiversity

HEP has been involved in biodiversity conservation projects. For example, the measures to protect the white stork have been implemented under a cooperation agreement signed in 2004 with the Environmental Protection Directorate of the Ministry of Culture.

Role of HEP Group companies

Companies – members of HEP Group play a significant role in the area of environmental protection. APO Usluge zaštite okoliša d.o.o. (APO Environmental Services) prepares studies, plans, rules and assessments for HEP Group companies and numerous external customers.  HEP ESCO d.o.o. was founded to promote consumption management and energy efficiency. In October 2006, HEP founded a company  for renewable energy sources, HEP - Obnovljivi izvori energije d.o.o.
