HEP and EU standards

The Republic of Croatian is one of those European countries that have the lowest emissions of greenhouse and acid gases. Thanks to the measures HEP has been implementing   the contribution to total emissions from the electricity sector is relatively small.

In 2006 HEP began an investment cycle to build power plants. All new plants will incorporate the best environmental  protection technologies available which guarantee compliance with all EU environmental legislation.

As the Republic of Croatia is in negotiations over joining the European Union, it is worth mentioning that HEP will continue to promote and transfer the fundamental values of the European Union in the area of electricity, including security of supply and sustainable and environmentally friendly development.

Environmental protection award

HEP's many years of compliance with sustainable development standards was recognized by relevant institutions: in 2003 HEP received a national award for general contribution to environmental protection.

Certificates

All hydro power plants have certificates of electricity production from renewable sources, which places HEP Proizvodnja among large certified producers of renewable energy in Europe, green energy.

The largest thermal power plant in Croatia, TE-TO Zagreb CHP, has the certificate ISO 14001:2004.  The certificate ISO 14001 for environmental management but also ISO 9001 for quality management were issued to all three hydro power plants of Production Area North situated on the Drava River: Varaždin, Čakovec and Dubrava and all hydro power plants of Production Area West: Gojak, Vinodol, Rijeka, Senj i Ozalj.

Biodiversity

HEP has been involved in biodiversity conservation projects. For example, the measures to protect the white stork have been implemented under a cooperation agreement signed in 2004 with the Environmental Protection Directorate of the Ministry of Culture.

Role of HEP Group companies

Companies – members of HEP Group play a significant role in the area of environmental protection. APO Usluge zaštite okoliša d.o.o. (APO Environmental Services) prepares studies, plans, rules and assessments for HEP Group companies and numerous external customers.  HEP ESCO d.o.o. was founded to promote consumption management and energy efficiency. In October 2006, HEP founded a company  for renewable energy sources, HEP - Obnovljivi izvori energije d.o.o.
